Christophe Sand est le directeur de l’institut d’archéologie de la Nouvelle-Calédonie et du Pacifique. Originaire de Nouvelle-Calédonie, il a dirigé au cours des 25 dernières années de nombreux programmes d’étude sur la préhistoire, la société traditionnelle et l’histoire coloniale de l’archipel, tout en participant à des programmes archéologiques en Polynésie occidentale et à Fidji. Parallèlement à une sensibilisation du public calédonien à son histoire, ses thèmes de recherche s’articulent autour du premier peuplement Lapita et des dynamiques culturelles préhistoriques et traditionnelles dans le Pacifique, ainsi qu’aux conséquences de l’implantation européenne en Océanie. Dans le contexte historique spécifique de l’archipel calédonien auquel est associé son travail, il s’intéresse tout particulièrement aux mécanismes d’appropriation du passé dans les processus de constructions identitaires contemporains. Il a rédigé une trentaine d’ouvrages, une centaine d’articles scientifiques en anglais et français et plus de 300 rapports internes. Récipiendaire en 2004 d’une médaille de bronze du CNRS et promu chevalier des arts et des lettres en 2009, il est depuis 2009 président d’ICOMOS Pasifika, branche régionale de l’instance internationale du patrimoine culturel liée à l’UNESCO.
